The basic rules of the Camelot wheel take sixty seconds to learn. Then you follow them, your set is technically flawless, and it is boring. This piece is mostly about that second part.

The wheel, quickly

Every key gets a code: a number from 1 to 12 and a letter — A for minor, B for major.

Three moves always work:

Everything else is a jump, and jumps are the interesting part of this article.

The wheel earns its keep because it hides the theory. You do not need to know that 8A is A minor and 9A is E minor and that they share six of seven notes. You need to know 8 and 9 are neighbours.

Why an in-key set can still fall flat

Here is the thing the rules leave out: a compatible key does not make a compatible track.

Follow the wheel strictly and you can play six tracks in a row that all sit at 122 BPM, all in 9A, all mixed cleanly — and the floor drifts. Nothing clashed. Nothing happened either.

Harmony is one of at least three things you are matching:

  1. Key — will the notes fight
  2. Tempo — will the beats line up
  3. Energy — is the track lifting, holding or releasing

The wheel only answers the first. A set that only manages harmony is a set with no shape.

Energy is the one to plan around. A run that goes 0.6 → 0.7 → 0.8 across three in-key tracks builds. The same three tracks in the reverse order deflate, and the harmony was perfect either way.

Making a big jump work

The most common real question — and it is not covered by "stay within one step" — is what to do when you need to get from 2A to 7A. Five steps. The rules say no.

Three ways through it.

Take the stairs. 2A → 3A → 4A. Each move is legal, and three tracks later you are somewhere new. This is what most in-key sets are actually doing.

Jump on a break. Harmonic clash needs two things sounding at once. If the outgoing track drops to drums and the incoming one enters percussion-first, there is a window where no pitched material overlaps. You can land anywhere. This is why drum-only intros and outros exist.

Jump on purpose. A hard key change is a musical event. Held for one bar it is a mistake; landed on a drop it is the moment people remember. The rule "never jump" is really "never jump by accident."

The +7 special case. Moving up seven steps — 2A to 9A — is a fifth. It is the single most common chord change in Western music, and it sounds like a lift rather than a clash. Worth knowing when you need altitude fast.

What the chart data actually looks like

We measured 643 tracks from the Apple Music charts across 12 countries. Two things matter for mixing:

The keys are lumpy. 3B — C♯/D♭ major turns up 63 times. 5B — E♭ major turns up 8 times. If you build a set around a rare key, you will run out of material.

But the top codes are scattered. The three most common — 3B, 9B, 10A — are not adjacent to each other. A set made only of chart hits will not flow by itself.

Two useful pairs do sit next to each other in the top five: 9A/10A and 9B/10B. Those are where the long runs live if you are working with mainstream material.

Tempo: the factor of two

Adjacent tracks want to be within roughly ±6% of each other in tempo, or the pitch-shift starts to show on vocals.

The exception is the deliberate one: a track at half or double the tempo will beatmatch perfectly. 140 BPM into 70 BPM is a legitimate transition, not a mistake. It is how you get from drum and bass into a half-time section without stopping.

Which is also why you should be suspicious when a BPM tool hands you a number that is exactly double what you expected. In our dataset Tennessee Whiskey reports 49 BPM and Last Night reports 204; both are detection artefacts of a pulse read at half or double speed. If two sources differ by a factor of two, tap along and trust your foot.

When to ignore the wheel

The track has no key. Percussion loops, drum tools, atonal techno, most breakdowns. Nothing to clash with. Mix on rhythm and energy alone.

The overlap is short. Two bars of crossfade with a filter on top — the ear does not have time to register a clash.

The tracks are already in the same family. Two tracks from the same EP, or two versions of the same song, will usually work whatever the codes say.

Your ears object. The wheel is a model of which notes overlap. It does not know about a sample two tracks share, or two vocal lines in the same register fighting each other. If it sounds wrong, it is wrong — the codes do not get a vote.

A workflow that holds up

  1. Get the codes. By name for released tracks, by file for your own.
  2. Group by tempo band before worrying about key. Use the BPM from the name lookup or file detector to form nearby groups.
  3. Find the neighbours. Similar Songs Finder pulls tracks close in key, tempo and feel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Camelot wheel? A notation that maps each of the 24 musical keys to a number from 1 to 12 plus A for minor or B for major. Adjacent numbers and same-number letter swaps are harmonically compatible, so you can mix in key without reading key signatures.

Why does my set sound flat even though everything is in key? Because key is only one of three variables. Check the energy profile: if consecutive tracks sit at the same energy, nothing is building, and no amount of harmonic correctness will fix that.
