How to Find the BPM and Key of Any Song — 5 Free Methods
Five ways to get the tempo and musical key of a track: by song name, from an audio file, by tapping, in your DAW, and by ear. Which to use, and how each one fails.

There are two different questions hiding behind "what BPM is this song", and picking the wrong method wastes your time.
- You know what the song is. You want the number. Look it up — seconds, no file needed.
- You have audio but no title. A rough mix, a live recording, something you made. Now it has to be analysed.

1. Look it up by name — fastest when you know the track
Type the title and artist, pick the right recording, read off the tempo, key and Camelot code.

Why picking the recording matters. A song is not one thing. The 1987 original of Never Gonna Give You Up and a later remaster carry different ISRCs and can report different keys — a remaster pitched a fraction sharp lands somewhere else on the wheel. Any tool that shows you a single result for a title is hiding that choice from you.
Fails when: the track was never commercially released, or it is a bootleg, edit or unreleased demo. Nothing to look up. Go to method 2.
2. Analyse an audio file — when there is no title to search
Drop the file in and the analysis happens in your browser. The audio never leaves your machine.

Fails when: the recording is very short, very quiet, heavily distorted, or has no clear rhythmic pulse. Rubato piano and ambient pads will produce a number, and that number will be noise.
Fix first, analyse second. If the audio is rough, clean it up before you measure — noise reduction for hiss and room tone, normalize for a recording that is too quiet. Change one thing at a time and re-run.
3. Tap the tempo — the method that never lies about which pulse you mean
Tap along on the spacebar for eight bars and read the average.
This looks primitive and it is the most reliable method on this page for one specific reason: you decide what counts as a beat. Every automatic detector is guessing at that, and half the time it guesses wrong.

Fails when: your timing is off. Tap for longer — eight bars minimum, sixteen is better.
4. Your DAW already knows
Ableton, Logic, FL Studio and Reaper all detect tempo when you drag audio onto a track, and most have some form of key detection.
Best choice if the file is already in a project and you need the grid to line up. Overkill if you just want a number.
Fails when: the performance drifts. Live drummers speed up. Your DAW will average across the drift and warp everything to a grid the band never played to.
5. By ear — slower, and it makes you better at this
Tempo: count beats for 15 seconds and multiply by four. Rough, but it will catch a detector that has doubled.
Key: play the song and hunt for the note that feels like home — the one the melody keeps returning to and resolves onto. Then decide major or minor by the colour of the chord built on it. Getting this wrong is normal at first; the relative major and minor share every note and only differ in where they settle.

The one failure mode that catches everyone
If two tools disagree by almost exactly a factor of two, neither is broken.
Tempo detection finds a repeating pulse. When the pulse is ambiguous, an algorithm can lock onto one that is half or double the one you would tap. A ballad with a busy hi-hat pattern reads double; a track with a heavy backbeat and little else reads half.
In our own dataset of chart tracks, Tennessee Whiskey comes back at 49 BPM — the real feel is around 98. Last Night by Morgan Wallen reads 204, and it is a ~102 BPM song. Both figures are internally consistent and both are useless until you decide which pulse you mean.
The check takes five seconds: tap along. Whatever you naturally tap is the tempo you want.
After you have the numbers
The key is only interesting once you use it. A Camelot code tells you which other tracks will mix with this one — same number, or one step either way.
